Commissioners voted 3-1 to approve a luxury bed and breakfast development that some argue would be out of place.
The project's developer said that although the three-bedroom units are considered market rate housing, they were specifically designed with multi-generational families in mind.
The project will be built in three phases, with construction of the first phase to include 107 units and a central community space.
In February, the Planning Commission rejected the project due to worries about increased traffic, too many gas stations, greenhouse gas emissions, and harmful impacts on a nearby community.
The expansion is strictly for storage related to AutoZone stores. It can't be used as a standalone warehouse or distribution center.
The popular restaurant chains are moving closer to opening new locations near the Indio Municipal Golf Course. An update on the projects was provided Wednesday.
The expansion, which still requires formal approval, addresses concerns about the aging infrastructure of the current facility, which has been in operation for 25 years.
