Planning Commission approves AutoZone expansion at site of formerly-approved restaurant
The expansion is strictly for storage related to AutoZone stores. It can’t be used as a standalone warehouse or distribution center.

The Indio Planning Commission has given the green light to expand AutoZone’s storage capacity on Jackson Street. The approved plan adds a 19,040-square-foot building to the existing retail store, replacing a previously planned fast-food restaurant pad in a larger commercial development near Avenue 42.
The expansion at 41850 Jackson St. will cover 1.6 acres and includes 79 parking spaces along with improved landscaping. It fits neatly within the Regional Commercial zoning rules, requiring no special permits or variances at a larger project titled “The Greens,” which will also see a new Dutch Bros. and Chick-fil-A in the future.
To ensure the expansion blends well with its surroundings, the commission set some conditions during its April 9 meeting. One key requirement is enhancing the greenery along Jackson Street.
The plan calls for planting three large, non-fruiting palm trees in the existing parking lot planter. These new palms need to be at least 20 feet tall when planted and will require a 36-inch box size.
The expansion is strictly for storage related to the AutoZone store. It can’t be used as a standalone warehouse or distribution center.
City staff explained that the addition aligns with the area’s designation for regional retail, as it supports the existing AutoZone operations. The Planning Commission unanimously approved the project during a brief meeting.
