New Indio Public Library showing signs of growth
The branch manager reported 544 new library card registrations and an increase in circulation.

Since its grand opening on October 15, the new Indio Public Library has quickly become a bustling hub of activity and connection for our community, according to its branch manager.
At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Branch Manager Joseph Hamersly reported 544 new library card registrations, a 43.3% increase in circulation compared to last year and attendance averaging between 181 and 251 patrons.
He added that 571 children have preschool and school-age programming in just the last four months and moving circulation this time last year was 947 titles and this year circulation is at about 2,132 titles.
Hamersly noted that the library’s success is being fueled by the vibrant atmosphere of our revitalized downtown. He credited much of the increased foot traffic to events held on the city-owned property at the corner of Bliss Avenue and Towne Street. Many residents, he said, “trickle over out of curiosity and stay for what we have to offer.”
“We’re just getting started,” Hamersly said. “The path ahead is an exciting one for the Indio Public Library, our partnerships and how we’re elevating literacy to not just be a commodity, but a necessity.”
He also reminded the council and the public that throughout history, the library has served as a sanctuary for growth and empowerment. “Todo son bienvenidos en la biblioteca siempre,” Hamersly added. “The library is a place to learn, to grow, and to empower, and will always remain as such.”
The library is already listening to community feedback, with plans to expand the children’s book collection and introduce new programs like a craft club, art club, and bilingual story times.
If you want to get involved, the library is currently accepting volunteer applications through the Riverside County Library System website. Learn more and fill out an application online.
