Indio’s Avenue 44 bridge reopens after more than two years of closure

The $35.1 million all-weather structure replaces a low-water crossing washed out by Tropical Storm Hilary in August 2023.

The bridge has been closed since 2023, and had been flooded multiple times before.

The City of Indio opened the new Avenue 44 All-Weather Bridge to the public Tuesday afternoon, ending a closure that began in August 2023 when Tropical Storm Hilary washed out the roadway at the Coachella Valley Storm Water Channel.

The bridge opened at 2 p.m. and spans Avenue 44 between Palo Verde Street and Aztec Street.

The section of road had a history of storm damage, having been affected by flooding events in 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

The completed $35.1 million project replaces the former low-water crossing with a cast-in-place concrete structure featuring three spans supported by large columns and deep piles, engineered to withstand future storm events.

The roadway was also widened to provide two lanes in each direction, and the project added sidewalks, a connection to the CV Link, curbs, gutters, and upgraded street lighting to improve safety and accessibility.

Stormwater infrastructure and channel protection were upgraded to improve flood resiliency and reduce erosion, and water, gas, and telecommunications lines were relocated into the bridge structure.

The bridge was funded through the Federal Highway Bridge Program, Measure A Funds, Coachella Valley Association of Governments Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fees, and Development Impact Fees for roads.
