More IID customers qualify for electric bill relief as IID expands assistance programs

The expansion will help families who may have previously earned too much to qualify for help but still struggle to balance their monthly budgets

Relief is on the way for Indio households struggling with the cost of utilities. The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) Board of Directors approved an expansion of its payment assistance programs, raising income limits to ensure more residents qualify for discounts in 2026.

The move comes after a record-breaking 2025, in which more than 12,670 customers received a combined $8.3 million in financial aid. By widening the safety net, IID officials hope to reach families who may have previously earned too much to qualify for help but still struggle to balance their monthly budgets.

“Our assistance programs are so helpful to many families, and our program updates can help even more customers,” said IID Board Chairwoman Karin Eugenio. “We really want to see that everyone who qualifies takes advantage of the assistance the District offers.”

The updates to the following programs could mean hundreds of dollars in annual savings for

The District’s primary assistance plan, the READY program, now allows customers to earn up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, plus an additional $10,000. This program provides a 20% monthly discount on electric bills, which jumps to 30% for seniors.

The income limit for the SHIELD program for seniors has been increased from 200% to 322% of the Federal Poverty Level. This 30% discount is available to seniors with significant medical or pharmaceutical expenses (exceeding 10% of their income).

For those facing a potential disconnection, the CARE program has increased its annual emergency assistance from $450 to $500.

Residents who rely on life-saving medical equipment that runs on electricity will now only need to renew their EASE application every three years, rather than every two. This program lowers monthly bills regardless of the customer’s income.

The District is encouraging all residents to review the new 2026 income guidelines, as the “200% plus $10,000” rule for the READY program significantly shifts who is eligible compared to previous years.
